Multifunctional Active Surfaces
Embedded software
Summary
This innovative project aimed to transform decorative surfaces of the car interior into illuminated interactive zones. I worked on defining the functions, designing the interface, and creating light animations to guide the user.
Context
Product : Integrated animated and interactive surfaces within the cabin
Company : Faurecia
Target users : Drivers and passengers of a premium vehicle
Challenges :
Imagine new forms of screenless interaction
Define a clear and intuitive light language
Create a consistent experience between gesture, visual feedback, and perceived action
Problems to solve
How to guide the user without text or screen?
Risk of ambiguity in the light codes used
Need to harmonize design, technology, and industrial constraints
Methodology
Research and Inspiration :
Study of gesture and light systems in the automobile
Reflection on unconventional affordances
Ideation and Prototyping :
Creation of wireframes and usage scenarios
Design of light animations for each function (e.g., trunk opening, night mode activation)
Readability tests in a physical prototype
Collaboration & Tools :
Work with innovation, HMI, and design studio teams
Close communication with rapid prototyping teams
Testing and Iterations :
Review in virtual reality and on a physical board
Adjustments of light codes based on feedback
Results & Impact
Deliverables :
Complete interface and scenario for interactive surfaces
Design pack for animations and UX logic
Impact :
Validated pilot project for presentation to partner manufacturers
Study basis for future embedded HMI systems
Feedback :
This project allowed me to explore alternative forms of interaction and strengthen my collaboration with the innovation teams.
